Indian Country Today has an editorial calling for President Obama to consider a Native American for the SCOTUS seat being vacated by Justice Souter. It correctly points out that there has never been a SCOTUS Justice that is Native American, nor have there ever been any Native American clerks at SCOTUS, and there is not a single Federal Judge (out of 866) who is Native American.
They suggest looking at John Echohawk, Pawnee; his brother Larry Echohawk; or Kevin Grover, also Pawnee. All three of these canditates are good, but lets look at some others also.
Diane Humetewa, Hopi, was the first female Native American U.S. Attorney.
Stacy Leeds, Cherokee.
Thomas Weissmuller, Mashantucket Pequot.
Mary Jo Hunter, Ho-Chuck.
Eugene L. White-Fish, Potawatomi.
That’s just a few, there are plenty more. I would go as far as to say that the President should not just consider a Native American, he should nominate one.
I wish that native Americans had more say in our nation.
Hell they were here in the first place!
And so many have assimilated into mainstream culture and made valuable contributions.

Hear! Hear! Blues!
Let’s start working to represent ALL of the “Americans”.
While I think it would be good to have a Native American Justice on SCOTUS, I do put the odds as slightly below slim to none…
Yeah but that was the consensus when Obama was running for POTUS too…

Oh, I would be very happy to be wrong on this – it would be great for the tribes, and this is the best opportunity that a Native American has had to be appointed.
I just don’t see it as likely.
Obama is cleaning house on Attorneys all over right now. Booting Bush appointees.
Who knows where this will go? but your right SCOTUS is a pretty high mark for( ANYBODY..)
